What is a creative technologist?
The short answer: someone who designs the thing and then builds it. The longer answer is more useful, because the job has changed substantially in the last two years.

A working definition
A creative technologist sits between three roles that used to be separate: the designer who decides what something should look and feel like, the maker who produces the visual craft, and the developer who builds the working thing. Instead of handing work across those boundaries, one person carries an idea through all three.
The title exists because those handovers are where most of the quality gets lost. A design gets simplified because it is awkward to build. A build ignores an interaction because it was not in the spec. A visual gets approved that nobody checked against the actual constraints. When one person owns the whole line, those losses do not happen.
What the job actually involves
Day to day, it is far less exotic than the title suggests. In a given week it can look like this:
- Graphic design and brand work: identity, layout, type, print, social media graphics.
- Visual production: photography, retouching, compositing, AI image generation, video and motion.
- UX/UI product design: flows, wireframes, design systems, prototypes, interface copy.
- Development: building the site, the app or the tool, including the parts nobody sees, like data models, permissions and billing.
- Product thinking: deciding what to build, what to cut, and what a feature will cost to run.
The last one is the difference between a creative technologist and a generalist. A generalist can do several jobs. A creative technologist makes decisions across them, which means accepting the trade-offs of each in the others.
How AI changed the role
Two years ago, the range described above was realistically out of reach for one person. Visual production at a professional standard took a crew. Shipping software took a team. Both of those constraints moved.
AI image and video tools mean a single visual person can produce sets that previously required a studio, a location and a schedule. AI-assisted development, or AI-first development, means a designer who understands systems can build and ship real software: databases, authentication, payments, email, monitoring. Not a toy prototype. A product with users and consequences.
What did not change is judgement. The models are confidently wrong in exactly the places that matter: a composite where the light does not agree with the shadow, a security rule that looks correct and is not, a flow that tests fine and confuses a real user. Knowing where to look is still the expensive part, and it still comes from craft.
How I ended up here
I did not plan the title; I arrived at it. I started in photo retouching and spent well over a decade in Photoshop, which is where I learned to see light. That became photography, then brand and graphic design, then interface design, then AI image and video production, then building software.
Each step was the same pattern: I wanted to make something, the thing needed a skill I did not have, so I learned the skill. That is genuinely the whole method. I learn whatever the work is interested in.
In practice it has meant contributing AI-composited visuals for the UK Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, leading a cross-disciplinary AI content team of photographers, digital artists and architecture consultants on a separate high-stakes project, and designing and shipping my own products: a free Premiere Pro plugin now past 600 downloads, an AI photography platform with subscriptions and two-factor authentication, and a realtime time and budget tracker I built for my own studio.
When you should hire one
- You have an idea and no clear picture of what it becomes, so a specification-first agency engagement will burn budget on discovery.
- The visual identity and the product need to feel like the same thing, not two vendors' work stapled together.
- You want to move fast and be able to change your mind without renegotiating three contracts.
- You need someone who can produce the imagery and build the surface it lives on.
When you should not: when the work is deep in one specialism and needs a team of experts in it. A creative technologist is not a substitute for that, and any honest one will say so.
